Worldwide semiconductor sales in 2009 were $226.3 billion, a decline of 9 percent from 2008 when sales were $248.6 billion. December sales were $22.4 billion, an increase of 29 percent from December 2008, when sales were $17.4 billion. December sales declined by 1.2 percent from November when sales were $22.7 billion. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.
2009 turned out to be a better year for the global semiconductor industry than expected. A strong focus on inventories throughout the supply chain mitigated the impact of the worldwide economic downturn and positioned the industry for growth as the global economy recovers.
China and India, two key emerging markets, are also driving demand. In addition to purchasing consumer items such as handsets and computers, both regions are continuing to invest in wired and wireless infrastructure. These investments in infrastructure create demand for a broad range of semiconductor products.

Global sales of semiconductors were severely impacted by the world-wide economic turmoil in 2008 resulting in the first year-on-year drop in sales since 2001.
Total sales for 2008 were $248.6 billion compared to $255.6 billion in 2007, a decrease of 2.8 percent. Sales fell from $22.3 billion in December 2007 to $17.4 billion in December 2008, a decline of 22 percent. December sales declined by 16.6 percent from November 2008 when sales were $20.9 billion.
The global economic recession severely dampened semiconductor sales in the fourth quarter of 2008, historically a strong quarter for the industry. Weakening demand for the major drivers of semiconductor sales--including automotive products, personal computers, cell phones, and corporate information technology products – resulted in a sharp drop in industry sales that affected nearly all product lines. Once again, the steepest revenue declines were in the memory sector where price pressure more than offset significant growth in total bit shipments.

Global sales of semiconductors grew for the sixth-consecutive year, reaching a record $255.6 billion in 2007, an increase of 3.2 percent from the $247.7 billion reported in 2006.
Worldwide sales in December were $22.3 billion, an increase of 2.5 percent compared to the $21.7 billion reported in December 2006. December 2007 sales declined by 3.6 percent from the immediate-prior month when sales were $23.1 billion.
The modest sequential decline in December reflected normal seasonal patterns.
Worldwide sales in the fourth quarter of 2007 were $66.8 billion, an increase of 2.5 percent over fourth-quarter 2006 sales of $65.2 billion.

WEET: September Chip Sales Remained Strong at $21.4 Billion

Global chip sales rose to $21.4 billion, an increase of 9.3 percent from September 2005, and a 4.2 increase from the $20.5 billion reported in August 2006. Strong demand for consumer products, including cell phones, MP3 players, and personal computers were major drivers of increased chip sales.
Global semiconductor sales in the third quarter of 2006 were $64.1 billion compared to $59.3 billion in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 8 percent. For the first nine months of 2006, sales totaled $182.6 billion - an increase of 8.9 percent from the $167.6 billion reported for the first nine months of 2005.
PC manufacturers are now producing systems designed for the new Windows Vista operating system, which is contributing to strong demand for DRAMs. DRAM sales increased by 10 percent sequentially and 40 percent from September 2005, reflecting growth in bit demand and tightening supply. Microprocessor sales increased by 4 percent from August of this year, while declining by 11 percent from August 2005. The year-on-year decline in microprocessor sales can be attributed to price competition as unit sales rose.
